BACKGROUND ON ANOTHER CRYSTAL SKULL

As mentioned at the beginning of this chapter, a life-size, seven-pound rock crystal skull recently came into my possession. It was brought to the United States from China about fifteen years ago by an anthropologist from Argentina and eventually came into my possession from a friend of his. He had recently passed away. There is, however, no documented provenance of this skull, and this information is just word of mouth. The anthropologist believed it was from the Hongshan culture of ancient China.

The Hongshan culture flourished in northeast China from around 5000 to 3000 BCE, making it 5,000 to 7,000 years old. This period is classified as the late Neolithic period, also known as the last part of the Stone Age. The Hongshan archaeological site was discovered by a Japanese archaeologist in 1908 and excavated in 1935. Numerous burial artifacts made of jade were found, as well as some small copper rings. These people did extensive work in jade, creating everything from everyday utensils to religious amulets and everything in between. They also worked with stone and clay.

An underground temple complex was also discovered at the Hongshan archaeological site along with an altar and clay female heads, which possibly represent deities. In fact, there is some evidence that this culture may have been the first to use feng shui due to the discovery of round and square shapes representing heaven and Earth. (Early feng shui was based on astronomy and its relationship to the Earth.) Several small jade skulls were also found at this site, but crystal skulls and crystal ornaments from this period are not very common.
